Check any name before you commit
These ideas are only word combinations. This tool cannot tell you whether a name is free to use. Run your top three through each step:
- Search it on Google. If a similar business in your field already ranks, pick something else.
- Check social handles. Look for the name on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. A matching handle (or a simple variation) saves confusion.
- Check the business register. In the US, search your state's business entity database (usually run by the Secretary of State). In the UK, use the Companies House name search.
- Search trademarks. Use the USPTO trademark search in the US or the UK IPO trademark search in the UK. Names too close to a registered mark in the same field can cause legal trouble.
- Check the domain. A .com (or .co.uk in the UK) that matches your name is ideal. Avoid hyphens and tricky spellings.
- Say it out loud. Tell it to three people and ask them to type it. If they get it wrong, simplify.
What makes a small business name work
- Short and easy to spell. Two or three words at most, so people can find you after hearing it once.
- Clear about what you do. A service word such as "Salon", "Pet Care" or "Cleaning" helps new customers and local search.
- Room to grow. Avoid a name that locks you into one product or one street.
- Sounds good on the phone and in an ad. Skip unusual spellings that you will have to explain every time.
- Not too close to a competitor. Being memorable matters more than being clever.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a good business name?
Pick something short, easy to spell and easy to say out loud. It should hint at what you do or how you make customers feel, and it should still work if you add services later. Say it over the phone to a friend: if they have to ask how to spell it, keep looking.
Should my business name include my location or service?
A service word (for example "Pet Care" or "Salon") helps new customers understand you at a glance and helps local search. A town name helps at first but can box you in if you move or grow. A name with a service word and no place is a safe middle route.
How do I check if a business name is already taken?
Search the name on Google and on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Then check your state business registry (in the US, usually the Secretary of State website) or Companies House (in the UK), and search the USPTO trademark database or the UK IPO trademark search. Finally, check that a matching domain name is available.
Does this tool check trademarks or availability?
No. It only combines words into ideas in your browser. It cannot tell you whether a name is free to use, registered or trademarked. Use the checklist on this page and, for anything important, ask a trademark attorney or solicitor.
Do I need a .com domain?
It is helpful, because people guess .com first, and UK businesses often use .co.uk. If your first choice is taken, add a short word such as "studio" or "co" rather than using hyphens or confusing spellings. Never buy a domain that is a near-copy of an established brand.
Can I change my business name later?
Yes, but it is a hassle: new signage, new listings, new accounts, and customers who may not find you. Spend an extra hour now rather than rebrand in a year. If you do rename, keep the old name on your Google Business Profile for a while so existing customers can still find you.
A good name is the start, not the finish. Start a Home-Based Beauty Business walks through setup, pricing, licensing and landing your first clients, so the name you pick has customers behind it.
